I had to link this article on my blog because it is so dead on. As a former chronic overthinker, I have seen the effects of such dangerous habits first hand. Overthinking is a habit programmed into us through society, parents, and teachers. I believe it is actually a response to the constant condemnation of failure. How heavily are we taught that making mistakes and being wrong is embarrassing, and makes us “less”? Unfortunately, fear of failure makes us hyper-analyze every situation so we can comfortably avoid any potential for mistakes or rejection. Sadly, this prevents most people from ever trying enough to really discover anything beautiful and new about themselves. This goes against our nature. Our nature is to learn through experience and failure. Watch a child – they are not concerned about putting the peg in the wrong hole. They just jab away at the damn thing until they get it. How much could we learn from the non-brainwashed child? How many risks would we take if we only understood they only serve to help us grow?
