After 4 years, I finally returned to Rome. My first trip a few years ago was mostly centered around visiting the Colosseum, which didn’t disappoint. With that said, I didn’t get the chance to just run around, eat gelato, eat pasta, and eat…everything. I think we walked 25,000 steps today in Rome, per my iPhone, and it was worth it. From the Spanish Steps to the Pantheon to Vatican City – we did work.
Rome is a spectacular city. It is steeped in so much history and culture it can border on overwhelming. Doing “Rome in a Day” is nearly impossible, but I did my best on this quick stop. Our lunch stop, at a truly mafia-esque fine dining place called Trattorio al Moro, had some of the most delicious pasta I’d had in my entire life. I call it mafia-esque because there is clearly a dining room designated for locals, smelling of cigarette smoke and lots of wine revelry. Then, there is a more formal dining room clearly designed for tourists. I don’t mind being labeled the latter, and the food was worth it.
After much rose, we made our way out and just wandered from sun up to sun down. A wonderful day in Rome. It really deserves a week or two of its own, but alas, I’m exploring all of Italy again. Florence, you’re up.
