I was really looking forward to visiting Greece on my Mediterranean adventure, as I’d never been and frankly, I heard it was one of the most beautiful countries in the world. While I “only” visited Corfu on this trip, I can certainly say that the people in Greece are gracious, humble, and welcoming, and that the surrounding areas are absolutely stunning. Corfu isn’t the tourist stronghold that Santorini or Athens are, and I found that I liked it that way. It was a little bit of a sleepy town, with people tending their homes, farms, and shops without much noise or hubbub.
The highlight, besides driving these rickety old 4 x 4’s (manual transmission) through the winding hills, mountains, and towns of scenic Corfu, was drinking the local beer, Mythos, with my dad. My dad, a former alcoholic, had been sober since 2003. As such, I’d never had the opportunity to crack a cold one with him. Well, today was the day. Not sure if it was the fact that he was dying from cancer (and finally realized he didn’t have that many more opportunities left), or that it was freaking hot – but we did it. And it was glorious. Glad to have finally shared a beer with my old man. I’ll truly never forget it.
