Was texting with a great friend of mine today and it inspired me to write a little bit about “ambition” – and coffee.
Ambition is a beautiful thing. Striving for more, striving to be better, striving to accomplish more, have more, do more, be more – all wonderful things.
The only caveat to ambition, however, is how sometimes the ambitious disregard the moment. They miss the small things that are going great in life today, the conversations, the sunset, the cup of coffee, the new song, or the way moon faintly shows up on a sunny day.
I remember when I was a little younger I was this way. I wanted so badly to move forward, I didn’t appreciate the surroundings when I was running. I remember playing ultimate frisbee and thinking, “Man, this would be so much better on the beach.” What a silly way to think. I have my life, fresh air, the sun, friends, and frisbee, and I am thinking about being somewhere else at a future time? What a sad thing to do – to devalue the significance of a moment.
We sabotage the moment all the time with our dreaming of bigger, better things. Bigger, better things are wonderful, and should be fought for – but certainly not at the expense of the moment.
Life is a collection of moments, and we have a limited number of moments in life. Why would you wish to be elsewhere? Never let yourself say, “When I get to xyz position/income/location/appearance, THEN i’ll be peaceful. Then, my mind will calm.”
But what about the process? Do you not get to enjoy the path to wealth? Or health? You need to, as you are ambitious, choose to enjoy the journey. Enjoy the process.
Choose to appreciate every hug, every song, every sunset, every cup of coffee, every glass of wine, every conversation, and every challenge. They are a series of moments that make up what will eventually become your story.
We of course must work hard, dream, have goals, and plan. But man – every cup of coffee is sacred. It is one moment, of our moment-limited life.
